Health and education bear brunt

No amount of Government spin can deny that a spate of public spending cuts is now their post election strategy and that they have already begun to be put in place.

Faced with the economic reality which they denied existed during the election campaign, ministers are now facing pressure from Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy to shave their spending.

That will have to translate into cuts in many areas where they can ill afford to be made.
