That Ireland is bedevilled by rampant violence is underscored by the latest cold-blooded murder in which a gunman followed a 23-year-old customer into the toilet of a pub and shot him in the mouth while a henchman stood guard at the door.

But hardly an eyebrow was raised when the gardaí revealed a separate murder investigation was already underway in the same district following the discovery of the body of a man in his early 40s who had been bound and beaten to death in his flat.
