Up to now, the Coalition has done everything possible to obfuscate attempts to discover why a deal was rushed through, leaving the Church paying €128 million in cash and property to the State in exchange for legal indemnity over abuse cases, while the State would pay the rest. As is now clear, the bill facing taxpayers could run to a billion euro or more.

At every turn, the Department of Education has refused access to any records relating to this deal.
