ANOTHER appalling weekend of death on the roads is a grim reminder that it will take more than token recognition of the penalty points system to make Ireland a safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Attitudes need to change

Essentially, it will require a fundamental change of attitude if the carnage is to end.

To date, there has been a 20% reduction in the number of fatalities over the same period last year. This underlines the effectiveness of the penalty system under which drivers can accumulate points for each motoring offence, ultimately leading to a ban.
