AS Cork today dons the prestigious crown of European Capital of Culture 2005, the time has come for people to cast scepticism aside and join in a collective wish for success as the city embarks on its exciting journey.

After all the recriminations over the failure to communicate with the public, it is appropriate to reflect on the positive potential of a year when Cork emulates the distinction of past cities of culture, ranging from Copenhagen to Madrid, Helsinki and Prague.

Despite today’s wintry forecast, there will be a warm sense of pride in the air tonight. Regrettably, for security reasons, only 26,000 spectators will line the city quays for what promises to be a spectacular show of fireworks and magic on the Lee. This is a time for the people of Cork to tell the world all that is best about their fine city and its vibrant culture.
