IT is incongruous to consider, as some economists suggest, that while the wealth being generated in this country will continue for the next 15 years, there are still unfortunate people dying on our streets.

It is an extraordinary dichotomy that even now in one of the wealthiest countries in Europe, a person can die in a shop doorway as happened in the early hours of the morning yesterday in Cork.

The woman in question, a young mother, was not alone because throughout this rich country there are people of all ages for whom the system cannot, or will not, cope.
