Society must address level of suicide
Based on figures from the majority of the country’s health boards, the National Para-Suicide Registry estimates that 10,224 people - will have attempted suicide before this year is out. It is slightly up on last year’s recorded figure of 10,000.
Unfortunately, about 15% of the people who attempt it, will go on to carry out the ultimate act. Although more women than men attempt suicide, the rate of actual suicide is greater among males. The number of young people also trying to end their lives is also frightening. This year, 260 children under 14 years of age will attempt suicide.
