Society must address level of suicide

Startling figures about the level of suicide and attempted suicide in this country every year were referred to at the National Paediatric Nursing conference yesterday, and present a major concern which has to be addressed on a societal basis.

Based on figures from the majority of the country’s health boards, the National Para-Suicide Registry estimates that 10,224 people - will have attempted suicide before this year is out. It is slightly up on last year’s recorded figure of 10,000.

Unfortunately, about 15% of the people who attempt it, will go on to carry out the ultimate act. Although more women than men attempt suicide, the rate of actual suicide is greater among males.
