A confrontation between Israel and Hamas sparked by weeks of tensions in Jerusalem has escalated as Israel unleashed new airstrikes on Gaza while militants barraged Israel with rockets.

The death toll in Gaza rose to 35 Palestinians, including 10 children, according to the Health Ministry, which said more than 200 people were wounded.
