The Government is refusing to admit it made a major mistake when it ignored public health advice and opened up the hospitality sector in the run-up Christmas. The public health experts have so far resisted the temptation to say "we told you so".

However, with daily cases averaging more than 7,000 and record numbers in hospital, something went wrong somewhere and someone has to take the blame.
