However, Mr Healy-Rae, a candidate in the newly- formed constituency of Kerry, yesterday insisted that the huge trailer at the Six Crosses on the N69 midway between Tralee and Listowel is on private land — and he has permission from the landowner.

“The question is does the speed van have express permission to park there?” Mr Healy-Rae said when asked for a comment.

The presence of too many speed vans in what is a problematic area in and around the Six Crosses has come under criticism at local council level previously.

The large trailer parked within the designated speed camera zone asks for the number one vote for Mr Healy-Rae in the interests of “experience and common sense”.

It has been parked for a number of days within the designated Go Safe zone of Billeragh, in a spot usually favoured by mobile speed camera vans, just inside the sign returning motorists to the limit of 100km an hour.

Supt Dan Keane of Listowel gardaí said he is in consultation with Go Safe to determine if “the large trailer” is obstructing operators of the mobile camera vans.

He has also asked Kerry County Council to determine if the spot in question is public property. The council is looking into this.

Meanwhile, Mr Healy-Rae, a TD for Kerry South in the last Dáil is canvassing for the first time in the Listowel area in what is the new single constituency of Kerry.

He said there had been “a great reaction” to the parking of the trailer advertising him.

Whilst he is not saying he parked there to obstruct the camera vans, Mr Healy-Rae said: “The office has been inundated over the past number of days by people saying they were very glad to see the lorry there.”

Mr Healy-Rae said people had remarked that some speed vans were “shooting fish in a barrel” as it was so easy to catch motorists in some areas.
