Is free GP care for kids a good idea? : Yes

The anticipated announcement of free GP care for under-5s later today is to be warmly welcomed.

Of course, I do add a health warning that we must ensure there aren’t too many caveats attached and it is not done to the detriment of other essential parts of our health service. I will wait to see the Government’s decision later today before finalising my opinion.

The Irish Examiner has rightly highlighted the cases where there is no apparent reason for the withdrawal of discretionary medical cards. Each story gave us an insight into an individual/family and the distress that ensued.
