THE economic downturn has led to a dramatic rise in the number of people receiving rent supplement, the means tested social welfare payment available to people who are unemployed or on low incomes to help them meet the cost of paying the rent.

Currently there are about 93,000 people in receipt of rent supplement payments.

Given the fact the State is paying €433m annually in rent supplement, it is understandable and right that efficiencies and savings be sought.
