With a gong in their hearts

THE extraordinary sound of UCC’s Javanese Gamelan returns to Cork Opera House this Thursday.

With a gong in their hearts

The orchestra will be joined by actress Fiona Shaw, dancer Colin Dunne and cellist Kate Ellis, as well as the West Cork Ukelele Orchestra.

The 66 hand-forged and hand-carved bronze gongs and metallophones, drums and solo instruments were made in 1995 by 30 craftsmen under Java’s greatest living gong-smith. Most students have never heard of a gamelan before attending UCC’s music department in Sunday’s Well, but it quickly captures imaginations and hearts, not least for the exciting performance opportunities and the chance to work with its dynamic leader, and UCC’s head of music, Mel Mercier.
