LIKE many tweets, the truth of this story can’t be verified, but there is a tale told around Montrose of Charlie Haughey arriving in RTÉ, having scraped an election victory.

As is the custom, senior RTÉ management lined out to bend the knee before the newly-minted Taoiseach. But there was an additional nervousness that night: the media, RTÉ included, had criticised Haughey — about which Charlie had already expressed his grave displeasure.

Haughey was only half-way up the staircase when he growled at the RTÉ executives: ‘I will shake this place to its foundations’. And he didn’t mean it in a good way.
