THE furore over the compassionate release from prison of the Libyan convicted of the Lockerbie bombing has the making of a huge political scandal in Britain.

Peter Mandelson looked uncharacteristically sheepish in his denials of British government involvement in the decision by the Scots minister to sanction the release. Gordon Brown’s government is fortunate parliament is not sitting – otherwise there would be a barrage of awkward parliamentary questions to answer.
