Mick Clifford: Is the long arm of the law extending too far?
Garda commissioner Drew Harris. Retired Chief Supt Gerry Mahon has written to the Garda boss to outline his concern about the manner in which Supt O’Neill’s case is being dealt with.
Criminal investigations into two senior gardaí in Limerick have caused some major waves in the city.
Both men have vehemently denied that any drugs were taken or that the CCTV images amount to such. In a High Court affidavit, Superintendent O’Neill stated that any basic investigation would uncover that the inspector in question “is the least likely character to take or ingest an illicit substance”, and that the CCTV evidence amounts to the man “wiping his nose”.

The unease around the case is further exacerbated by affidavits submitted on behalf of Supt O’Neill by two retired chief superintendents, Gerry Mahon and John Kerins.
