Jennifer Horgan: It takes a village — so why is the work of our country divided by gender?

Our new Government is more comfortable with women looking after the children, the elderly, the unwell, and the people with disabilities

'It’s fascinating to me that it is only women who get trapped by their physical attributes. Yes, women can have babies — and it is a power to be respected and cherished. But women are more than baby-vessels.'

I’m wondering if our Government has a very particular understanding of the ‘It takes a village’ idea.

For them, it doesn’t take a village — it takes a village of women. Our Government, in line with our constitution, seems to believe that caring duties pertain to women exclusively, and so should be overseen by women only.
