The notion of a far-right ideology becoming a political reality here is nothing short of terrifying

Agatha Christie might have regarded it as a foreseeable twist in the tale. If last week’s elections’ results point to one aspect of a predictable Irish psyche, it’s our reliance on a modesty that resonates with our scarred past, a tradition that we unfailingly fall back on in moments when we feel threatened.
It’s a custom of opting for the status quo. There have been many such moments, but none more defining as when the safety of our children is threatened.
