ON the morning of October 3, 1995, I was in the common room of Heald Business College in San Francisco along with the other students and faculty members, all of us waiting for the verdict in the OJ Simpson murder trial.

At the time I was an instructor in English and communications in the college (and also, for one unforgettable semester, basic maths. When my late father heard this news he whistled and said: “America truly is the land of opportunity”).
