Fergus Finlay: Dear Simon, we are failing people with an intellectual disability

Simon Harris makes his way through well-wishers after being confirmed as the new leader of Fine Gael, paving the way for him to become Ireland's youngest Taoiseach.

Dear Simon,

Please forgive the familiarity of using your first name. It’s too late to call you Minister and too soon to address you as Taoiseach. You’re taking office at a very challenging time for your party, and I’m sure you don’t want or need my advice. I’m a Labour man anyway and I’ll never be a Fine Gael voter, but it’s in all our interests that our next Taoiseach gets a real chance to show what a difference he can make. So I’m going to start by genuinely wishing you success on a personal basis.
