Jennifer Horgan: If men don’t read fiction that builds empathy, we have a problem

A scene from One Day on Netflix. My husband is not going to wake up to messages about it from his male friends any time soon.

The WhatsApp messages have been coming all week. ‘Ruined.’ Followed by, ‘Devastated.’ Then a lull. A day or two later: ‘Crying in the shower thinking about that scene again.’

My friends have been watching One Day on Netflix. The first despairing missive did nothing to deter future viewings. One by one, they fell like dominoes, sob-sob, crying emoji after crying emoji.
