AS a young journalist I remember writing a story on the lack of availability of pain killing epidurals to women giving birth in Cork city.

It was like a version of an Irish joke. If memory serves me public patients in the Erinville Hospital could get an epidural if they were lucky enough to give birth on a Monday and a Wednesday, and those in St Finbarr’s on a Tuesday and a Thursday.
