AN Bord Pleanála’s approval of the construction of the southern section of the North-South electricity interconnector will heighten the controversy surrounding what is likely to be the biggest infrastructural project in the history of the State.

Business groups say the project is essential for the country to sustain economic growth and to improve the resilience of our electricity grid. They say that, at present, the reliance on a single interconnection between North and South that is subject to constant outages poses risks to businesses.

According to Chambers Ireland, the interconnector will benefit the island as a whole and could lead to cheaper electricity for businesses and householders. Businesses in the North are just as enthusiastic.
