Mentored by McGuigan: Boxing history

OLDER boxing fans may recall Barry McGuigan’s glory days and how he would always show gratitude to his manager Barney Eastwood by publicly declaring: “Thank you very much, Mr Eastwood.”

It even spawned a comedy record of that title in 1985 by the late Dermot Morgan.

Now it is surely the time for such praise to be heaped on McGuigan himself as on Saturday his protégé Carl Frampton secured the WBA world featherweight title in New York with a stunning victory over Leo Santa Cruz on what is being regarded as one of the greatest nights in Irish boxing history.
