Don’t go - Supporting the unsupportable

AS the Euro 2016 party gets into full swing it is easy to forget how corrupt the administration of international football has become and how many entirely inappropriate decisions, especially around selecting venues, have been made.

Don’t go - Supporting the unsupportable

The awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar is one such decision. Apart at all from temperatures that make any physical activity much less football all but impossible, apart at all from the scores of migrant workers killed building the required infrastructure the mores of Qatar are medieval and should be a cause for isolating the country rather than endorsing it with a great sports carnival.

Yesterday a Doha court convicted a Dutch woman of adultery and handed her a one-year suspended sentence after she reported being raped while on holiday. The male defendant was given a sentence of 100 lashes for adultery and 40 lashes for consuming alcohol. It is easy to be blase about these 10th century sentences but they give voice to the murderous attitude that brought carnage to Orlando at the weekend. The Irish team should not, if it qualifies, go to Qatar.
