Call for investment in technology sector to avoid job losses

I appeal to the incoming Government to continue investment in education, research and development, and the provision of broadband across the State, particularly in East and West Cork, which, has been starved of industrial development over a long period of time.

Call for investment in technology sector to avoid job losses

The crisis in the technology sector shows little sign of ending. Layoffs and cutbacks in multi-nationals are becoming commonplace, while many indigenous companies are cutting back or even facing closure.

Now that sector is under pressure worldwide, yet some politicians contend the workplace will remain unscathed.

Continued investment by public and private sectors is essential for future growth. It is important those running businesses and investing in the sector take a long-term view.

Promises of Industrial Development for East Cork were made but never materialised. Some years back there was mighty gusto by the IDA, Local Authority and others to put in place all the services needed to accommodate the proposed Amagem Industry, at Ballyadam, Carrigtwohill. We remain waiting for this industry, with nothing on site but weeds and briars. East Cork deserves better. Together with Midleton — Youghal and Whitegate are in a situation.

I renew my appeal to Government to put East Cork on the industrial map, otherwise ,many of our young people will have no option but take the boat to another country in search of jobs.

Cllr. Noel Collins,

“St. Judes”,

Co. Cork.
