Harris’s age has no place in talk of his suitability

It is unfortunate Roisin Shorthall questioned Simon Harris’ suitability as Minister for Health on the basis of his age, describing him as ‘young and inexperienced.’

Harris’s age has no place in talk of his suitability

If a cabinet member were described as ‘old and past it’, there would rightly be accusations of ageism. Simon Harris should be given an opportunity as our new Health Minister and judged according to his actions. His efforts at securing a cross-party approach to deal with health issues should be supported. I do not share his politics but I have no doubt as to his commitment, regardless of his age. (It is also worth noting he has been a public representative and TD longer than new cabinet member, Katherine Zappone.) There is an irony that in recent weeks, we marked the centenary of the efforts of young men and women who helped to found this State and the appointment of a capable young politician to cabinet is now questioned.

Ageism, in any form, has no place in politics.
