Savita died of sepsis. Using her death as a pro-abortion argument is disgraceful

Bríd Smith, TD, says we need “to get religion out of our hospitals” or “we are looking at another Savita case in the future” (Irish Examiner, Letters, May 5). 

Three independent reports show that Savita Halappanavar died of sepsis, caused by medical mismanagement. Religion played no role.

If we are to avoid future, similar deaths, the changes to our healthcare system called for in those reports need to be implemented.

Obscuring the cause of this poor woman’s death, in pursuit of a pro-abortion agenda, is disgraceful.

It will delay the necessary changes and put the lives of other woman at risk.

The Eighth Amendment, which Smith would like to see removed, has saved between 225,000 and 250,000 babies.

These figures are estimated in relation to the rise and decline of abortion in Britain.

It is quite likely that many of those who voted for Ms Smith are among those who were saved.

They, and others, might wish to consider the choice they made in voting for her, come the next election.
