Alison O’Connor (Irish Examiner, April 22) has highlighted the basic problem of the present political situation. 
Media cheerleading will deliver new government

That is a minority government which would be asked to act like Santa Claus but would have no power to do so. She, therefore, reached the conclusion that ‘we’d just be better off with another general election straightaway’.

Since way back in the eighties the same political grouping with the aid of a sympathetic media were elected to government at all elections right through Celtic Tiger times up to 2007. It acted like Santa and used its power to increase government spending. This, they argued, was necessary to raise our standard of living.
