Groupthink in focus during referendum

During last year’s same-sex marriage referendum, the phenomenon of Groupthink came into sharp focus.

Groupthink in focus during referendum

Regardless of one’s views on the core issue, it was extraordinary the degree to which the entire political and media establishments circled the wagons and effectively censored any dissenting views on the subject.

Judging by the leaflets I have received from candidates in the forthcoming NUI Senate election, Groupthink has again arisen, this time around the issue of the eighth amendment.

Notwithstanding the fact that Ireland has one of the lowest maternal/infant mortality rates in the world, substantially courteous of said amendment, most of the candidates appear to be parroting the “ get rid of the eighth amendment” mantra.

Yet we only have to look to the appalling record of our UK neighbours, which has one of the highest infant mortality rates in Europe, thanks to their notoriously “ liberal “ abortion regime.

This particular voter will be dissenting from the group think on this life and death issue.
