The post person then leaves a “docket in box”, to inform the alleged defaulter they can sign for this postal item by calling to their nearest postal sorting office.

Unless they think they have won the Lotto, the person can then choose not to call to collect that item. Because of this legislative and practical defect, millions of euro are lost to the Revenue Commissioners yearly.
