Patrick Coveney couldn’t imagine what it’s like to live on an average income
He should not, however, be “mystified”.
He should perhaps remember that half of the working population survives on an annual income of €26,000 or less.
This is roughly 1% of the income he is reported to receive from Greencore (Mr Coveney’s ‘package’ is reported to be approximately €2.5 million per annum).
If he remembers that, then he will see that the combination of USC, property tax, water charges, refuse charges, and one of the highest VAT rates in the EU, have destroyed the disposable income of half the working population.
He will see too, that the manipulation of percentages with which the present Government persists can’t hide a simple fact.
Half the working population now have no money left to pay for anything they might enjoy.
That same half struggle with routine expenses like GP fees, or the €145 per month many have to pay for medicines.
Add on the exorbitantly high interest people pay on already exorbitant mortgages, and the ‘mystery’ begins to dissolve.
All this has been imposed on stagnant , if not declining, earnings from 2008 to today.
And finally, remember the overwhelming evidence, cited by Bernie Sanders so effectively, that over the past 40 years the greater part of the benefits of economic growth have gone to the top 1% of income earners, and there is no more mystery!
