Oireachtas members’ salaries and allowances have been reduced

I refer to a letter from Daniel MacCarron carried in your Letters page ( Irish Examiner, February 8) in respect of the expenses of the members of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Oireachtas members’ salaries and allowances have been reduced

Mr MacCarron’s letter is factually inaccurate in respect of expenses. The salary and allowances referred to in his letter belong to a different era and were abolished or changed in March 2010 and reduced further in subsequent years. Leinster House operates a transparent system of allowances for its members.

The basic salary for all TD’s is ¤87,258. There are no long service increments for members.

All other allowances may be viewed on our website www.oireachtas.ie where not only will your readers find an accurate account of allowances payable to members but will also see attendance records and records of payments made.

I would be obliged if you could bring this to the attention of your readers.
