THOUGH there is little pleasure in marking another’s misfortune it is reassuring that consumers have been influenced by the recent emissions scandal and changed their buying habits. Volkswagen dominated the Irish motor market for several years but has dropped to fourth position.

Korean brand Hyundai was the best-selling brand in January with 5,062 registrations. Car sales were up 34% month-on-month.

Rubbing salt into the wound for VW, Skoda — another brand in the VW stable — slipped to seventh. Only four makes recorded a drop in sales: Citroen, Subaru, Seat, and Porsche, the last two also operate under the VW umbrella. VW will be more aware than anyone of the challenges it faces in rebuilding its credibility as it faces multibillion-dollar fines and the prospect of long-term damage to its sales.
