UN force is doing important work on the Golan Heights

I suggest the reasons given by Edward Hogan (January 13) why the UN Forces should not be on the Golan Heights are some of the main reasons the “Force” should remain in place.

UNDOF (United Nations Disengagement Observer Force) maintains an international military presence in the area and provides a forum for dialogue regardless of the current turmoil in Syria.

It is important this facility to allow communication between military authorities be retained.

The United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) has maintained a military observer presence in the area since 1948.

Ireland also contributes officers to UNTSO.
