Assad has protected Syrian minorities from ISIS

Both David Newmark and John McGrath (Irish Examiner 08 December) make valid points in relation to the “conflict” in Syria.

Not only has the Assad regime ensure relative freedom and rights for minorities, but have also prevented fundamentalists enforcing their brand of Islam on the people of Syria.

In particular attempts by the Muslim Brotherhood (early 1980s) were defeated by the Assad regime.
