It’s easy to explain why water network is a mess

Liam Byrne tells us that the provision of water and sewage facilities in this country has become ‘a political football’ (Letters December 8).

The reason it has become a political football is that those who were responsible for running it have not adequately maintained its infrastructure since Victorian times.

The result is leaking pipes and polluted waterways and harbours.
