Assad is only trying to stop Sunni supremacists spreading their evil
Assad may be an authoritarian ruler but by no means is he of the same league as Hussein. In fact he is looking like that necessary secular tyrant that holds back the terror of Sunni Islamist empowerment as exhibited by IS, Al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda and other associated terror groups in Africa. Under Assad there was relative freedom and rights for minorities.
It is almost an absurdity that his governing Syria should be deemed illegitimate when so many countries in the UN are ruled by tyrannical regimes.
His objective was and is to hold onto power and keep the Sunni supremacists from exerting their world view in the region.
This incidentally is the sole cause of the Syrian civil war and promulgated from the objectives and charters of the Muslim Brotherhood i.e. Sunni dominance and Sharia compliance across the world.
They do not recognise national boundaries, so staying out of Syria is not an option, but demonising Assad and wondering — like a pundit on NewsNight did — who was the greatest threat to the West is simply a failure to confront the Sunni supremacist designs of the Muslim brotherhood and other Jihadist terror groups.
