Christy Kelly may be right when he points to ‘the drawbacks’ of the budgets ‘over the past seven or eight years’ of austerity as ‘imposing inequitable cuts ... without regard to the social consequences’. [Letters, October 28].

He also has a point when he describes the recent budget as being ‘crafted in a superficial way to mainly benefit certain groups’.

The fact is that the drawbacks of the budgets of the previous seven or eight years of boom, which were also crafted in a superficial way to mainly benefit certain groups, were not pointed out. That had dire consequences. Those boom time budgets ended with a country that was bankrupt.
