Our proud sporting heroes

How wonderful last weekend was for Irish sport in rugby, soccer, boxing, etc. Spare a thought too for the new Cork senior hurling champions, Glen Rovers, and especially that great little club Newcestown who are now senior football and hurling participants.

In 1961 as a player with Newcestown we won the West Cork minor football and hurling championships, a feat that has not been achieved since by any other club in the west Cork division.

A now retired teacher, Seán Collins, initiated the formation of the Newcestown club, who over the years produced wonderful players such as members of the Kehily family, Paddy Crowley, Pat Kenneally, and others to play on the Cork teams.
