Renua going down the right road in their plan to jail reckless bankers

Allow me a short comment on the article by Fiachra Ó Cionnaith, ‘Renua vows law reform to jail ‘reckless’ bankers’ (Irish Examiner, July 25).

The proposal to jail managers and directors who are practising reckless or illegal lending is without doubt a measure that will offer a reality check to those who seem to perceive themselves as above the law.

The Renua initiative is a step in the right direction. It is a move toward the creation of a culture of responsibility in a sector which led to the collapse of the economy.

It is also changing the culture in a sector where the law has not been applied vigorously.

On the other hand, to offer money to these whistleblowers defeats the purpose.

The decision to denounce unethical and criminal behaviours doesn’t fit the purpose if the motivation is to get a monetary gain.

Finally, how can the banking inquiry have any effectiveness if it is only producing a debate?

If it doesn’t have serious consequences?

I have no affiliation whatsoever with Renua party.
