I wish to thank you for the article in your paper about Coffee. “Smell The coffee” (Irish Examiner, 26 June). It was interesting and helpful, but with regard to the smell, incomplete.

Agriscience killed coffee’s true aroma

As a youngster growing up in Dublin I could smell the coffee from Bewleys in Westmorland St, from as far away as the Bank of Ireland. It cast a spell over all passers-by.

Unfortunately that aroma no longer haunts Westmoreland St, not because Bewleys have gone, but because the scientists have improved the coffee plant taking away the smell.
