Politicians breach principles upon which they were elected

Letter writer, Maeve Halpin from Ranelagh recently ended a letter with the following paragraph:

Politicians breach principles upon which they were elected

“Why are extremely lucrative sources of revenue like the telecoms networks, the LUAS network and natural gas supplies in private rather than public hands?

“These guaranteed revenue streams could be used to fund essential services and welfare instead of filling the coffers of multinationals, who pay practically no tax”. (Letters, May 16).

This strikes at the heart of all that is wrong with the governance of our country. Just look at plans this week to sell off the remaining 25% of Aer Lingus.

Why do the politicians we elect to serve the common good give away that which belongs to the people they represent?

Why do they give away the very means by which most of the ills which have been foisted upon every citizen can be cured?

They have made billionaires of businessmen, giving away guaranteed revenue streams which should be used in health, industry, welfare, and developing our own natural resources.

This means of development has been taken from the citizens and placed in the hands of the boardrooms and shareholders of private companies.

This policy is in breach of all of the principles upon which they were elected.
