ONE of the most uplifting aspects of travelling around Ireland now is seeing how the appearance of villages has improved so much in recent years.

In many cases, parcels of waste ground have been transformed from eyesores into things of beauty such as environmental parks, usually for the benefit of residents rather than tourists. And for that much credit must go to the Tidy Towns competition.

Picture-postcard villages such as Adare, Co Limerick, and Sneem, Co Kerry, have led the way for many other places off the beaten tourist track and Kiskeam, in north Cork, is an example of what can be done with local effort.
