The government, politicians and lobby groups are presenting the campaign for the referendum as exclusively about “marriage equality”. How could I be against equality, the concept sounds so right and fair? I have to vote yes you say.

However, research tells us approximately 1.6% percent of the population identify themselves as gay or lesbian. Further research shows where same sex marriage has been legalised only 25% of gay and lesbian people availed of it. So essentially we are being asked to radically change the definition of marriage to accommodate approximately 0.4 percent of the population ie, one person out of every 250.

Redefining marriage however has far reaching consequences for all. It changes how we understand the concept of family and it also affects the right of a child to a mother and a father.
