The global reaction to the humanitarian crisis created by the devastating earthquake in Nepal has gone a long way to alleviating the somewhat lethargic response of the Nepalese government (World News, 29 April).

Sean Sherlock, Minister of state at the Department of Foreign Affairs, pledged “up to €1 million to supply life saving essential support.”

A laudable response, however, when compared to the response of the Israeli government, which has 250 first response medical technicians, doctors and nurses on the ground in Nepal, it puts into perspective the easy decision to donate money rather than direct aid through personnel.
