Referendum campaign: Illiberal acts

THE high moral ground can be a cold and lonely place, especially when occupied by so-called liberals who prove to be hypocrites.

Referendum campaign: Illiberal acts

When it comes, for instance, to tearing down posters advocating a no vote in the forthcoming referendum on same-sex marriage, the intolerance of those who like to think of themselves as liberal is boundless.

In reality, they can be as illiberal as the best of them.

According to the Mothers and Fathers Matter group, campaigning for a no vote, several of their posters have been torn down in various places around the country.

In some instances, the perpetrators have been videoed.

Intriguingly, it seems that in matters political, those who style themselves as being to the left of centre are often further to the right than the very fundamentalists they abhor.

All too often they end up ripping down their opponents’ posters, the kind of act they are quick to condemn in others.

Whatever the outcome of the referendum may be, the most important thing is that every yes and no poster be removed by the people who put them up.
