Disconnected - Next month’s referendum

FORMER president Mary McAleese has always been a committed Catholic, so her decision to declare she will vote for same-sex marriage next month is a significant intervention.

Disconnected - Next month’s referendum

Her statement that endorsing the amendment would help dismantle the “architecture of homophobia” has a particular ring of truth to it. She also made particular reference to the high suicide rate among young — 15 to 25 — male homosexuals and said each of us has an obligation to make the choices that will allow them be full citizens in their own country.

If Mrs McAleese’s statement is compared to the startled response from the Catholic bishops to Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s apparent nonchalance over their threat to refuse to deal with the civil aspect of marriages in church, it is not too difficult to decide which position is more empathetic and a realistic assessment of the diverse world we live in.
