How Apollo 13 changed our world view for ever

I wish to thank Ray Ryan for his article ‘Chris Hadfield to recall a northside Cork boy’s links to the Space Age’. 

The news, for me, was that Frank O’Connor had memories of Blarney Street, where I lived more than half a century ago. As for the Apollo 13 astronauts, they did indeed drive past the door of the house in which I am now typing this.

I knew the time they were due in their big ‘American’ cars, but the windows were not transparent, so I did not see faces.

But it could not have been anybody else. I remember thinking that the moon was now so ‘near’ that going there and back was not much bigger a deal than, a Sunday outing to the seaside.
