FORMER British prime minister Tony Blair is the latest figure to warn that his successor David Cameron’s promise to hold a referendum on Britain’s EU membership would cause economic “chaos”.

Mr Blair yesterday warned that Mr Cameron had put “exit on the agenda” by pledging a vote and that leaving would threaten the UK’s position as a “great global nation”.

It is hard to think that even holding a vote on such a prospect would not have a negative impact on our economic recovery. Our economy is so deeply entwined with Britain’s — and the North’s — that any change in that relationship would have very serious implications for us, so serious in fact that it may be appropriate for us to express this concern in the strongest way to those trying to get Britain to leave the EU.
